The Truth of How Our Mind Works
Psychologists and researchers today accept that we have a negativity bias. In order to survive over the thousands of years of our evolution, being able to respond to immediate dangers and challenges was an advantage. Our minds have evolved to be constantly scanning for threats to our survival. Neuroscience studies show that our brains react more strongly to negative stimuli than positive stimuli. This means you’ll notice and remember the negative things that happen to you more than the positive if your mind is left to its own devices. In fact, you’ll tend to revisit and focus on what is not working, or anything you feel worried or unsettled about. This is evolution’s way of making sure you attend to being safe first and foremost. This, coupled with the mind’s natural tendency to wander when not focused on tasks or activities, can bring you back again and again to what isn’t working. You’ll then focus on the lowest-hanging fruit of discord, a tendency that escalates when you feel out of balance or stressed.
